Hull City 1-3 Manchester United

Manchester United secured all three points at Hull thanks to a second-half strike from Dimitar Berbatov and an Andy Dawson own goal.

United had gone in front on the stroke of half time when Wayne Rooney struck but the champions were pegged back when Craig Fagan slotted home a second-half equaliser from the penalty spot.

The first half was dominated by uncharacteristic sloppiness from United, with Rooney and the restored midfield unit of Darren Fletcher and Michael Carrick guilty of wasting possession far too often.

Hull were left appealing strongly for a penalty on the 20-minute mark, after Richard Garcia went down in the box but referee Alan Wiley was quick to wave away their complaints.

United's lack of incisiveness and inability to keep the ball in midfield made for an end to end half and Fagan and Garcia were constant threats up front for Hull. United's opening goal came against the run of play at the end of the half, with Rooney finishing well from Fletcher's cross.

Rooney was at the heart of everything United did today but was at fault in the second half as his error in defence put Rafael Da Silva under pressure, leaving him no choice but to concede a penalty, which was swiftly converted by Fagan.

Hull were good value for their goal and continued to bomb forward in attack but Rooney was obviously keen to make up for his error and he did so with 20 minutes of the game remaining, with Dawson unable to do anything but convert the United striker's cross into his own net.

More was to come from Rooney, as he picked out Dimitar Berbatov with an inch-perfect cross, allowing him to tap in a simple finish and ensure the scoreline flattered an unconvincing United performance.
