Hull City 1-5 Tottenham Hotspur

Match Reports, 21:55, August 19, 2009 ,

Jermain Defoe scored a stunning hat-trick as Spurs outclassed Hull at the KC Stadium to make a perfect start to their season.

Spurs attacked from the start and Hull struggled to contain the threat posed by Defoe, Robbie Keane and Aaron Lennon. The England striker opened the scoring in the 10th minute, firing a left-foot shot into the bottom corner from Tom Huddlestone's pass.
It was 2-0 five minutes later when Keane found Wilson Palacios who lashed the ball past Boaz Myhill.
It looked all over for Hull but Tigers boss Phil Brown brought on Geovanni for Daniel Cousin and the Brazilian had an immediate impact on the game, appearing to get a touch on Stephen Hunt's long-range free-kick to make it 2-1. The home side looked likely to get the equaliser but Defoe got his second a minute before half-time with a classy finish into the roof of the net after beating Michael Turner.
It remained 3-1 until the 79th minute, Keane getting a deserved goal with a glancing header from Lennon's cross, and the rout was complete in injury time when Defoe completed his hat-trick with an emphatic finish from the edge of the area.
