Leeds caused another Capital One Cup shock after beating Everton earlier in the competition as they deservedly saw off Southampton 3-0.

Leeds started well and Michael Tonge's early dangerous ball into the box had to be cleared away by the Saints defence. United missed a clear chance to take the lead in the 15th minute when Luke Varney contrived to miss an open goal from one yard out after being set up by El-Hadji Diouf. Ten minutes later the lively Varney curled an effort narrowly wide before, three minutes later, the former Crewe Alexandra and Portsmouth striker saw his volley crash against the crossbar. However, the Championship side deservedly took the lead in the 35th minute when the persevering Varney surged clear down the right before delivering a cross that broke for Tonge who guided a shot into the net from the edge of the area. Nigel Adkins' Saints side were very poor throughout and United continued to dominate in the second half. Kelvin Davis did well to keep out yet another Varney effort but Leeds grew more nervous in the closing stages after missing so many chances as the visitors finally started to move up through the gears. However, the United defence stood firm and, after Rodolph Austin saw his late effort kept out by Davis, Diouf was on hand to slot the ball into the net before Luciano Becchio set the seal on Leeds' victory.
