Liverpool 1-1 Arsenal

Match Reports, 18:14, August 15, 2010 ,

A bizarre own goal by Jose Reina denied ten man Liverpool a win as Arsenal earned a point and also had a man red carded at Anfield.

Following a disappointing goalless first half, in which Joe Cole was sent of for the first time in his career on his league debut for the Reds, the second half burst into life within a minute thanks to David N'Gog's strike for the ten men.
Arsenal looked like they ran out of ideas until Reina spilled the ball into his own net in the final minute to rescue a point for the Londoners. And there was still time for Laurent Koscielny to see red on his Gunners debut for two bookable offences.
Thomas Vermaelen went close to breaking the deadlock after just five minutes when Samir Nasri teed him up from a free kick around 30 yards from goal. However his fierce drive was palmed away by Reds keeper Reina at almost full stretch.
Arsenal enjoyed slightly more possession throughout the half without really creating any clear cut opportunities.
Liverpool were forced to defend in numbers at times, but they almost went ahead in the final minute of the first half.
Glen Johnson hit a shot from outside the area which Manuel Almunia pushed over his crossbar. And from the resulting Steven Gerrard corner N'Gog's header was hacked off the goal line by the well positioned Gael Clichy.
There was still time for Roy Hodgson's men to be reduced to ten men when Cole was red carded for a late lunge on Koscielny which left the Gunners stopper taken away on a stretcher but not seriously hurt.
Liverpool went ahead in the first minute of the second half when sloppy defending gave the ball away to Javier Mascherano. The Argentine slipped the ball through to N'Gog and he fired high into the net inside the area, although there were question marks over Almunia's positioning.
Liverpool defended in numbers throughout and when Tomas Rosicky's shot was brilliantly tipped over by Reina on 86 minutes it looked like it had earned them maximum points.
However the Gunners salvaged a draw in the final minute when Marouane Chamakh got to a deep cross from the left and bundled it against the post as Reina could then only fumble the rebound into his own net.
There was still time for Gerrard to bring out a fine save from Almunia with a 25-yard free-kick, while Koscielny was given his marching orders for two yellow cards when he deliberately handled the ball having already fouled Dirk Kuyt just moments earlier.
