Liverpool 2-2 Birmingham City
Match Reports, 22:37, November 9, 2009 ,
Steven Gerrard came off the bench to rescue a point for Liverpool after Birmingham took a shock half-time lead at Anfield.
David N'Gog stabbed the Reds in front after just 13 minutes following good work down the left from Albert Reira but Birmingham hit back with two goals before half time.
First, after 26 minutes a free-kick was flicked on by Roger Johnson and then Scott Dann, allowing Christian Benitez to head home his first goal for the Blues from just two yards out.
Then in first half stoppage time Cameron Jerome picked the ball up 30 yards from goal, turned and fired in a strike that fizzed past Reina into the top corner to stun Anfield at the break.
Liverpool toiled in the second half but were given a lifeline with 19 minutes left when David N'Gog burst into the box and appeared to go down under a challenge from Lee Carsley. Referee Peter Walton showed no hesitation in pointing to the spot though replays suggested contact was minimal.
Steven Gerrard, on for the injured Reira, confidently converted the spot-kick, sending Hart the wrong way.
Liverpool brought on Alberto Aquliani for his home debut late on as they desperately pushed for a winner but the Blues held on to claim a deserved point.
