Manchester City 0-1 Manchester United

Match Reports, 15:31, November 30, 2008

A close-range Wayne Rooney goal just before half-time was enough for 10-man Manchester United to come out on top at Eastlands.

Even though the opening exchanges were largely uneventful, there was no doubt that United were the better side early on. Sir Alex Ferguson's side were passing the ball around nicely as the home side looked very nervous.

Having said that, there weren't too many clear-cut chances for the visitors with a Cristiano Ronaldo header the closest they came to opening the scoring. Dimitar Berbatov also came close after some good play from Rooney - but they just couldn't find the target often enough.

Their domination eventually paid off though as they took the lead just before half-time. Joe Hart parried Michael Carrick's original shot, but Rooney was there to tap the ball home for his 100th club career goal.

Mark Hughes made two changes at the break and they seemed to be paying off as the home side started brightly in the second half. Shaun Wright-Phillips was much more involved and it was his pass that Benjani fired into the side netting from a tight angle.

United were then reduced to 10 men when Ronaldo was shown a second yellow card for handling the ball deliberately. This gave the home crowd a real lift as they looked to get back into the game in the final 20 minutes.

Daniel Sturridge was then brought on to give City an extra attacking intent, but, in truth, they never looked like getting an equaliser. Despite being a man down, the United defence stood firm and the Premier League champions managed to hold onto their narrow lead.
