Goals from Sergio Aguero, Yaya Toure and James Milner's penalty handed ten-man Manchester City a 3-0 win against Liverpool.
Aguero and Toure gave City a two-goal cushion at the interval, before Gareth Barry was sent off for two bookings 17 minutes from time. However, Liverpool did not have any time to make the extra man count as City were awarded a penalty which Milner converted to take City three points clear at the top of the Premier League. Liverpool, who enjoyed some good possession but lacked a cutting edge, remain in sixth spot on 34 points - 14 adrift of City. Stewart Downing had the first chance of the game on eight minutes as he got into the City area, but his England team-mate Joe Hart raced off his line to block the effort and denied him a first goal for the Merseysiders. However, City broke the deadlock out of the blue on 10 minutes when Aguero's hopeful shot from just outside the area dipped under the dive of Jose Reina and into the net. City almost snatched a fortunate second on 22 mintes when Edin Dzeko's shot deflected off Glen Johnson and rolled just wide of the upright with Reina beaten. Charlie Adam had a 25-yard free-kick parried away by Hart at the other end moments later. Reina did well to tip over Vincent Kompany's header from a James Milner left-wing corner on 32 minutes before City went two-up from the second corner. David Silva played it in from the right and Yaya Toure beat Johnson to head high into the net past Reina. Liverpool enjoyed the better of the second half in terms of possession and they were given a real chance to get back into the match on 73 minutes when Barry stepped across Daniel Agger to receive a second yellow card and subsequent red. But, within a minute, Yay Toure was bundled over by Martin Skrtel just inside the Liverpool area to win a penalty which Milner hammered into the top corner of Reina's net. Substitute Adam Johnson almost made it four on 80 minutes with a curling shot from outside the area which rebounded off the upright with Reina beaten. Liverpool's best chance came in the final minute when Hart parried a Craig Bellamy shot and Maxi Rodriguez fired the rebound wide from a tight angle.
