Manchester City 4-0 FC Porto
Match Reports, 19:12, February 22, 2012
Manchester City thrashed ten-man holders Porto 4-0 to march into the Europa League last-16, 6-1 on aggregate.
Roberto Mancini's side led 2-1 from the first leg last Thursday and went ahead in the first minute at the Etihad Stadium through Sergio Aguero. Second half goals from Edin Dzeko, David Silva and David Pizarro made the score-line a lot more flattering, while Porto had Jorge Rolando sent off for a second yellow card after his overzealous complaint about City's second goal.
City had a dream start when they went ahead inside 20 seconds when an error from Nicolas Otamendi allowed Yaya Toure to surge towards goal and he played in Aguero who fired past Helton to make it 3-1 on aggregate.
Yaya Toure almost added a second on 16 minutes when he was played through by Silva but this time Porto keeper Helton did well to deny him.
Porto's best chance of the half came a minute later but Joe Hart pulled off a fine save to prevent Silvestre Varela's effort from beating him.
Both sides continued to press but City went closest on 29 minutes when Aguero latched onto a long through ball and went past the advancing Helton but his effort at goal came back off the crossbar.
Porto pressed after the break in search of a way back into the contest but City managed to keep them at bay.
And the tie was virtually over on 76 minutes when Aguero's neat pass put through substitute, Dzeko, and he made no mistake as he fired past Helton.
Rolando felt the Bosnian was offside and his protests resulted in a second booking and subsequent red card to leave Porto down to ten men.
City took full advantage as Pizarro, who had only been on the pitch a matter of minutes, played a ball into the middle from the right and Silva finished from close range.
Pizarro then put the icing on the cake on 86 minutes when he burst into the area and fired past Helton.
