Manchester United 1-2 Ajax

Match Reports, 22:18, February 23, 2012

Ajax produced a spirited performance to win at Old Trafford in a thrilling game but Manchester United progress in the Europa League.

In an open first-half with plenty of chances, it was United who took the lead very early on when Dimitar Berbatov found Javier Hernadez, who in turn beat a man to finish past the Ajax keeper Kenneth Vermeer in the sixth minute.
Opportunities continued to present themselves for both teams and Ajax managed to keep themselves in the tie when Aras Ozbiliz's strike took a deflection to find the back of the net on 37 minutes and the sides were all square at the break on the night.
The action continued in the second-half and David De Gea was called into action on 58 minutes when the Spaniard managed to tip the ball over the bar from close range with a superb save.
As the game came towards a conclusion, United took the fire out of the proceedings and looked set for a comfortable victory.
However in some late drama Toby Alderweireld headed home from close range with just three minutes to go to pile the pressure on United.
The Red Devils did manage to hold on at Old Trafford and despite losing on the night, the Premier League outfit progressed to the last-16 of the Europa League 3-2 on aggregate.
