Manchester United responded to their poor midweek showing at Wigan Athletic by crushing a dire Aston Villa side 4-0 at Old Trafford.
Wayne Rooney, despite not playing particularly well, grabbed a brace, while Danny Welbeck and Nani also got on the scoresheet as Alex McLeish's toothless side were outclassed.
The win extends United's lead at the top of the table to five points again as they banished the memory of their shock 1-0 defeat at the DW Stadium in some style.
Villa may avoid relegation this season but they produced a terrible display, giving Manchester City little hope that they could do them a favour by frustrating Sir Alex Ferguson's side.
Villa's best chance of scoring came inside the first 60 seconds when Andreas Weimann found himself in the clear down the left but the Austrian's poor shot from a good position was saved by David De Gea.
It proved to be a costly miss as United took the lead in the seventh minute, Rooney sending Shay Given the wrong way from the spot after Ashley Young has been upended by Ciaran Clark, although replays suggested the former Villa star went to ground very easily after minimal contact.
United deserved the lead, though, and were rampant for the rest of the first half, wasting a host of chances before Welbeck doubled their lead, turning Young's low cross home at the far post.
United took their foot off the gas after the break but were still far too good for the woeful visitors.
Rooney grabbed his second goal of the afternoon when his deflected shot beat Given after he had been set up by Welbeck and Antonio Valencia, before substitute Nani completed the scoring in stoppage time when he slipped the ball under the Villa goalkeeper's body.
