Middlesbrough 1-1 Aston Villa

Match Reports, 17:25, May 16, 2009 ,

Middlesbrough's Premier League future is hanging by a thread after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Aston Villa at the Riverside.

The home side started brightly and deservedly took the lead in spectacular fashion, when Tuncay's overhead kick beat Brad Friedel with just 14 minutes on the clock.
Boro continued to dominate but failed to turn possession into goals, with Friedel making a fine save to deny Justin Hoyte while Mike Riley rejected penalty claims after a challenge from John Carew on Marvin Emnes.
They were made to pay for their inability to add to the lead after 57 minutes, when Carew poked the ball home after a goalmouth scramble in the home penalty area.
The draw means Middlesbrough will need to beat West Ham at Upton Park next weekend, and hope both Hull City and Newcastle lose their final games, with Hull also having a four-goal better goal difference than Boro.
