Newcastle United 3-1 Middlesbrough

Match Reports, 22:26, May 11, 2009 ,

Alan Shearer's first win in charge of Newcastle lifts them out of the relegation zone as Middlesbrough now look all but relegated.

Gareth Southgate's side made the better start to the game and took the lead on three minutes when Tuncay's effort was saved by Steve Harper before bouncing of Habib Beye's leg and rolling into the back of the net.
Boro though showed old frailties by giving away the lead six minutes later, Danny Guthrie's corner was powered past Brad Jones by the head of Steven Taylor.
Newcastle had chances to take the lead before the break, Mark Viduka hitting the post but had to wait until the 71st minute to go infront when substitute Obafemi Martins, who had been on the field for less than a minute, cut past Matthew Bates before slotting the ball home.
Shearer's side made sure of the points four minutes from time when another substitute Peter Lovenkrands crashed the ball into the roof of the net from close range after Kevin Nolan's low cross.
The result now leaves Newcastle outside the relegation zone on goal difference while Middlesbrough are now three points from safety with just two games to go.
