Newcastle United 4-2 Southampton
Despite early goals in each half from Southampton, strikes from Cisse, Sissoko and Cabaye secure a vital win for Newcastle.
The game was only three minutes old when Morgan Schneiderlin latched onto a Rickie Lambert's header to put the visitors in front at St James Park. Despite going a goal down, Newcastle responded with efforts from Cisse and Sissoko but saw them saved well by Artur Boruc in the Southampton net. The home side did level on 34 minutes when Yoan Gouffran skillfully played in Sissoko who knocked home the equaliser. Then on 43 minutes a route one style ball landed at the feet of Cisse and volleyed superbly past the sprawling goal keeper to turn the fixture on its head.
The second half began in similar fashion when Lambert picked up the ball in the area and stuck powerfully home to level the scoreline once again. The match then took another twist when Daniel Fox was adjudged to have handled the ball in the area. Referee Foy awarded Newcastle the penalty and Yohan Cabaye stepped up and slotted the ball home to make it 3-2. Fox's day went from bad to worse on the 78th minute when his clearance stuck fellow defender Jos Hooiveld and rolled into his own net. Newcastle held on to win 4-2 and take three vital points in the race for survival.
