Portsmouth 1-2 Wigan Athletic
Match Reports, 17:23, November 1, 2008 ,
Emile Heskey's injury time strike condemned Tony Adams to his second defeat as Portsmouth manager as Wigan won 2-1 at Fratton Park.
With rain teaming down on the South Coast, the game started at an electrifying pace with both sides creating plenty of chances in the opening period, with Peter Crouch going closest as his header rebounded off the crossbar on the half-hour mark.
However, Papa Bouba Diop conceded his second penalty of the week after a needless foul on Titus Bramble in first-half injury time, leaving Premier League top scorer Amr Zaki the chance to give Wigan the lead from the spot. The Egyptian obliged as he smashed the ball past David James for his eighth league goal of the campaign.
Portsmouth responded with even greater vigour after the break but their luck was out as Crouch twice more and Sylvain Distin saw their efforts smash off the woodwork, while Wilson Palacios was responsible for no less than three goal-line clearances.
Half-time substitute Niko Kranjcar looked to have grabbed Portsmouth the point they deserved, as he drove a left-footed half volley through the legs of Chris Kirkland from the edge of the box with just nine minutes left on the clock.
Back came the Latics though and Lee Cattermole aimed a low driven cross into the six-yard box, where Emile Heskey arrived to scuff the ball past James and steal Wigan the three points. The winner was Heskey's 100th Premier League goal.
