Southampton are through to the fourth round of the FA Cup after beating Blackpool with goals from Lee Barnard and Guilherme Do Prado.
The Saints thoroughly deserved their 2-0 victory against their Premier League opponents after dominating possession for large period and creating a host of chances. Barnard got the home side up and running after a goalless first-half with a well taken finish in the 53rd minute as the striker reached quickly to score after Blackpool keeper Paul Rachubka had saved Rickie Lambert's initial shot. Ian Holloway's men almost levelled against the run of play just minutes later when Brett Ormerod had an effort cleared off the line, but that was one of just three shots on target the visitors managed to create. Southampton, by comparison, clocked up 14 and only a string of fine saves from the former Huddersfield and Charlton stopper kept the score respectable. Guly, on as a late substitute, settled the match with two minutes of normal time remaining as he turned smartly before slamming home a fine shot from distance into the back of the net. Blackpool, who had one eye on top-flight safety, were much changed from the side who have more than held their own in the top flight this season and it showed. They failed to gel and were no match for a dynamic Saints side who are chasing promotion into the Championship. However, if the Seasiders do manage to avoid relegation, then Holloway will have no regrets about his team selection for today's game.
