Stoke City 1-0 Portsmouth

Match Reports, 18:13, November 22, 2009

Ricardo Fuller's second-half strike handed Stoke a 1-0 win against Portsmouth in a lacklustre clash at the Britannia Stadium.

Adverse weather conditions did not help proceedings as Pompey will rue an early missed penalty, while the Potters ground out the win in a game of very few opportunities. The victory for Tony Pulis' side lifts them up one place to ninth on 19 points as Portsmouth stay bottom on seven points.

A scrappy start to the game burst into life on seven minutes when Portsmouth were awarded a penalty after Rory Delap carelessly kicked Aruna Dindane to the turf inside his own area.

However Kevin-Prince Boateng spurned the chance to hand Pompey the lead when his penalty was comfortably saved by Thomas Sorensen down to his left.

The strong wind and rain played a big part in disrupting the clash as neither side could manage to produce a killer final ball into the area and both keepers were largely spectators for the remainder of the half.

The second half followed a similar pattern until the 52nd-minute when Jamie O'Hara had an effort from distance which Sorensen had to tip round his own post.

Dindane almost produced a bit of magic on 64 minutes when he picked up a Michael Brown ball over the top before turning and hitting a volley just high and wide of the goal.

The only goal of the game came from some great build-up play on 74 minutes as Matthew Etherington played the ball to Fuller on the edge of the Pompey area. And he was allowed time to turn before curling a low shot into the far corner past keeper Jamie Ashdown.

Andy Wilkinson almost capped off the game with a brilliant solo goal on 87 minutes as he intercepted the ball inside his own half before charging into the Pompey area and hitting an angled drive just over the far corner of the net.
