Stoke City 2-0 Wigan Athletic

Match Reports, 17:13, May 16, 2009 ,

Second half goals from Riccardo Fuller and James Beattie lead Stoke to a deserved victory over a Wigan side that offered little.

With both teams already safe, there was very little riding on this game but the Potters were determined to put on a show for their fans in their final home game of the season.
The best chance of a quiet first half came eight minutes before the break as James Beattie turned smartly inside the box before pulling the ball back to Fuller in-front of goal, but he miss-controlled and the chance went begging.
Ten minutes after the restart, Charles N'Zogbia took the ball away from Andy Wilkinson and surged towards goal but his shot went wide from a tight angle.
On 69 minutes, Ricardo Fuller broke the deadlock with persistent play on the edge of the box that saw the ball fall kindly for him and he fired low into the bottom corner from 18 yards.
Six minutes later James Beattie put the game beyond Wigan with a fine header from close range after a delicate cross from Matthew Etherington and Wigan couldn't claw their way back into the game.
