Stoke City 2-1 West Ham United

Match Reports, 17:37, October 17, 2009 ,

A James Beattie brace gave Stoke their first three points since August after overcoming West Ham, who remain second bottom.

The former England international opened his account from the penalty spot after Matthew Etherington drew former team-mate Julian Faubert into a foul inside the box. Questions may surround the amount of contact made on the ex-West Ham winger but none will be raised about Beattie's spot-kick on ten minutes, as he beat Robert Green with a cool finish.
Gianfranco Zola's side responded well to going behind with Carlton Cole looking a constant threat. But it was the unlikely figure of Matthew Upson who came to their rescue, nodding home a Mark Noble corner from close range with Thomas Sorensen stranded.
However, the Potters' lead was restored after 68 minutes when England keeper Green parried a Ricardo Fuller shot into the path of Beattie, who could not miss from close range, piling on the misery for West Ham who have picked up just two points since the opening game of the season.
