Sunderland 1-1 Manchester City

Match Reports, 18:14, March 14, 2010 ,

Adam Johnson's superb 90th minute strike rescued Manchester City a deserved point in a 1-1 draw at Sunderland.

Johnson struck as the game entered stoppage time just as a goalkeeper Craig Gordon-inspired Black Cats looked like recording their first win over City at the 10th attempt and their first back-to-back wins in 15 months.
The point keeps City two points behind fourth-placed Tottenham, while Sunderland edge seven points clear of the relegation places.
Following a bright opening Sunderland took the lead on nine minutes. Steed Malbranque whipped a great ball from the left and Kenwyne Jones got up highest to divert a header into the top corner of Shay Given's net.
The Black Cats continued to pressurise City, who looked lacklustre given their two-week break from the action.
However Roberto Mancini's side did get a chance on 30 minutes when Shaun Wright-Phillips bundled his way into the area, before Carlos Tevez then teed up Gareth Barry and he fired inches wide of Gordon's upright.
City improved dramatically in the second half with Gordon doing well to deny Roque Santa Cruz on 50 minutes after a neat flick on by Tevez.
A minute later Wright-Phillips was played in and went for power at the near post which Gordon saved with his outstretched boot.
On 70 minutes Craig Bellamy whipped a low cross in from the right by-line and Tevez met it at the near post but again Gordon was on hand to deny him from point-blank range.
City continued to pressurise Sunderland and Bellamy thought he had levelled on 80 minutes when he was played in by Patrick Vieira. But, after beating Alan Hutton for pace, he was denied by Gordon.
City finally got the equaliser their second half display warranted in the first minute of stoppage time.
Bellamy's sweet strike through a sea of players was blocked again by Gordon. And, after the subsequent Barry corner was cleared, Johnson picked it up just inside the area before curling an unstoppable effort over the head of Jordan Henderson on the line and into the top corner of Gordon's net.
