Sunderland 1-1 Wigan Athletic
Match Reports, 17:36, February 6, 2010 ,
Sunderland came from behind to land a share of the points with Wigan in an entertaining game at the Stadium of Light.
The visitors took the lead in the 20th minute thanks to a thunderbolt from Mohamed Diame, who won the ball in midfield, drove into the box before unleashing a right-foot shot from the right edge that flew past Craig Gordon.
Kenwyne Jones hit the post for the Black Cats and Lee Cattermole forced a good save from Kirkland before half-time but Paul Scharner mishit a great chance as the Latics enjoyed the better of the play.
James McCarthy was denied just after the restart with Gordon diving at his feet, after a slip from Michael Turner, who missed a glorious chance at the other end when his glancing header went wide.
The Black Cats certainly improved after the interval and Jones drew them level in the 64th minute, heading Jordan Henderson's cross past Kirkland after out-jumping Titus Bramble.
Darren Bent almost added to the score two minutes later but could not find a way past the keeper.
The England striker could have taken all three points for the home side deep into injury time but his last-minute effort was blocked by his strike partner Jones.
