Sunderland 2-0 Swansea City
Match Reports, 17:34, January 21, 2012
Sensational goals from Stephane Sessegnon and Craig Gardner saw Sunderland take the three points against a wasteful Swansea City.
Swansea enjoyed the lion's share of the possession but only tested Simon Mignolet once in the Sunderland goal. Stephane Sessegnon netted in the first half and Craig Gardner added the second late on as Sunderland's fine run of form continued.
Scott Sinclair squandered a great chance on 13 minutes as he blazed over the bar from eight yards after being picked out by Nathan Dyer's cutback.
The opening goal came seconds later as James McClean found Sessegnon in the left channel. Sessegnon raced into the box and curled the ball beyond keeper Michel Vorm from a seemingly impossible angle.
Gylfi Sigurdsson tested Mingolet with Swansea's only other effort of note just shy of the hour mark. Sigurdsson's free-kick curled round the wall but Mignolet got down to his left to make the save.
Sessegnon headed wide from close range with ten minutes remaining but the points were sealed four minutes later. Craig Gardner was afforded time and space 30 yards out and unleashed a ferocious drive into the top corner that left Vorm rooted to the spot.
Sunderland have now claimed 16 points from eight games under Martin O'Neill and climb into the top half of the table. Swansea slip to 13th with only six points on the road all season.
