Sunderland striker Danny Welbeck grabbed a brace but the spoils were shared in an entertaining encounter at the Stadium of Light.
Everton took an early lead after some good work from Steven Pienaar and Leighton Baines, with the latter providing the cross for Tim Cahill to head beyond Craig Gordon on six minutes.
The hosts were level after 23 minutes following a fantastic run from Bolo Zenden, the veteran Dutchman worked his way past Pienaar and Baines to deliver a low cross that Welbeck managed to guide home.
Everton looked the brighter of the two sides after the interval but it was Sunderland who took the lead when Welbeck latched onto a fantastic Kieran Richardson cross and sent the ball into the top corner with a fine headed shot, although Richardson appeared to be offside when he received the ball from Lee Cattermole.
The visitors continued to push for an equaliser and they were rewarded for their efforts after 83 minutes when Arteta's effort took a wicked deflection off Phil Bardsley that left Gordon stranded in the Sunderland goal.
