A late first-half strike by Jermaine Jenas settled an even contest between Tottenham and West Brom at White Hart Lane.
The Spurs midfielder took aim from 22 yards-out having worked some room, before curling a low shot beyond Scott Carson on 43 minutes.
Baggies defender Jonas Olsson brought the best out of Heurelho Gomes on 23 minutes, with a glancing header that was spectacularly clawed to safety by the home keeper.
The post came to the Spurs shot-stopper's rescue in the second half when he was beaten by Fortune's deflected strike, while Jermain Defoe cleared Shelton Martos' header off the line.
Tottenham almost snatched a second in stoppage time, but the lively Aaron Lennon saw his close-range left-foot strike hit the inside of the post.
The result leaves West Brom adrift at the bottom of the table and almost certain now to drop into the Championship, while Spurs remain on course to finish seventh and claim a place in next season's UEFA Europa League.
