Tottenham Hotspur 1-1 Wolverhampton Wanderers
Match Reports, 21:37, January 14, 2012
Tottenham fail to join Man City at the top of the league as Wolves earn a share of the spoils with a hard-earned point.
The home side were clear favourites before kick-off and Luka Modric almost handed them the lead with two early chances but it was Wolves who opened the scoring. Roger Johnson's header was turned away by Brad Friedel and Steven Fletcher instinctively pounced on the rebound to grab his ninth goal of the campaign.
Spurs responded well to going behind and Rafael van der Vaart came close with a 20-yard strike, though the visitors should have doubled their lead moments later when David Edwards sliced a glorious opportunity wide from 12-yards.
Emmanuel Adebayor thought he had pulled Spurs level on the stroke of half-time when he poked Gareth Bale's shot into the roof of the net but his strike was ruled out by the linesman's flag.
The hosts eventually got their breakthrough in the 51st minute when Modric's 20-yard effort snuck under the body of Wayne Hennessey and they almost took the lead immediately after. Modric's initial shot was saved by the goalkeeper before Aaron Lennon saw his follow-up blocked inside the six-yard box.
Tottenham had plenty of chances to win it but were mostly limited to long range efforts. Bale, Van der vaart and Kyle Walker each fired off-target from distance, while Emmanuel Frimpong forced a wonderful stop out of Brad Friedel at the other end.
