Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 Birmingham City
Match Reports, 17:14, August 29, 2009 ,
Aaron Lennon scored in stoppage time to clinch the points for Spurs against Birmingham and maintain Tottenham's 100% record.
Tottenham were dominant in the first half and Lennon could have given them the lead after he was played in by Luka Modric, but Joe Hart made a fantastic sprawling save to keep the scores level after twenty minutes.
Two minutes later the best chance of the half fell to Jermaine Defoe after he latched on to Tom Huddlestone's through ball, but the England striker placed his shot wide of the mark.
The dead-lock was broken by second half substitute Peter Crouch on seventy-one minutes, as he headed home from Huddlestone's delivery from the right hand side.
Three minutes later however, the scores were level once again as Tottenham failed to deal with a high ball and it fell kindly for Lee Bowyer in the box and he tucked it home from close range.
The game was won in the ninety-fourth minute as Roman Pavluychenko dispossessed Stephen Carr and cut the ball back across the box and it fell to Lennon, who stepped onto his left-foot and drove it into the bottom corner.
Birmingham will be left to lick their wounds after looking for so much of the game set to take a point, but on chances Tottenham certainly deserved their victory.
