Substitute Roman Pavlyuchenko struck a dramatic late winner at White Hart Lane to condemn Liverpool to their first league defeat.
A Dirk Kuyt goal in the third minute was the only highlight of an uninspiring first half as Tottenham struggled to compete with Liverpool seemingly content to retain possession.
The Reds really should have sealed the win in the opening 15 minutes of the second half after a host of goal scoring opportunities - the best of which came from Steven Gerrard but his delicate chip came back off the cross bar.
Kuyt, Xabi Alonso and Albert Riera all had chances to add to the lead but all failed to find the net, and Spurs made the Reds pay on 70 minutes.
David Bentley whipped a curling corner into the area and, under pressure from Darren Bent, Jamie Carragher sent the ball past his own keeper to put the home side back on level terms.
The game seemed destined for a draw before Bentley made a darting run down the left-hand side on the stroke of full-time and cut in to shoot with his right foot. Pepe Reina did well to save but Bent kept the ball alive and pulled it back for Pavlyuchenko, introduced at half time, who coolly flicked the ball inside the far post to send the supporters into delirium.
Harry Redknapp has now taken seven points in his first three games as boss which has moved Spurs move off the bottom, while Liverpool drop back to second behind Chelsea on goal difference.
