Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 Manchester City

Match Reports, 17:18, May 16, 2009 ,

A last-minute Robbie Keane penalty took all three points for Spurs and ended Manchester City's hopes of Europa League qualification.

Mark Hughes' side have endured a woeful season away from home, with just two victories, and they started the game like a team not enjoying life on the road. Spurs flew out of the blocks and Jermain Defoe brought a brilliant save out of Shay Given in just the second minute.
The former Newcastle goalkeeper had to be on hand a few moments later, as Roman Pavlyuchenko's low drive arrowed towards the top corner until Given palmed away. He completed his hat-trick before the 20 minute mark when he denied Ledley King.
However, there was nothing Given could do when Defoe gave Spurs the lead just before the half hour mark, a delightful back-heel diverting Tom Huddlestone's low cross into the back of the net.
City looked disjointed and lacking inspiration before the break and, in truth, should have been three or four down before Hughes got the chance to change things. The second half was completely different though, as the men from Eastlands upped the tempo. Felipe Caicedo tested Gomes twice before substitute Valeri Bojinov grabbed his first goal in English football, to deservedly pull City level.
The game seemed to be drifting towards a draw until referee Mark Halsey awarded a controversial spot-kick with just four minutes left on the clock as Frazier Campbell went down under a challenge from Micah Richards. The England defender appeared to take the ball but his claims fell on deaf ears, and Robbie Keane slotted home to end City's hopes of European football next season.
