Tottenham Hotspur secured top spot in Group A after a Jermain Defoe brace helped them to a 3-3 draw in Holland against FC Twente.

The picture in Group A was simple ahead of tonight's action with Spurs needing only to match or better Inter Milan's result in order to go through as group winners, while FC Twente needed just a point to secure a Europe League spot ahead of Werder Bremen. In the end, both got what they wanted. Spurs took the lead in the 12th minute in bizarre fashion as Peter Wisgerhof's backpass took a bobble in front of debutant goalkeeper Sander Boschker who subsequently missed his kick and the ball rolled agonisingly into the net. The lead though lasted less than ten minutes as Benoit Assou-Ekotto was penalised, perhaps harshly, for handball in the box and former Wigan midfielder Denny Landzaat scored from the spot. Both sides had chances before the break but it was Spurs who finally edged back in front just two minutes after the half-time interval as Aaron Lennon's delightful lay-off was hammered home by Jermain Defoe. However, the lead again lasted less than ten minutes as Spurs switched off at the back and allowed Theo Janssen time to pick out Roberto Rosales in the box and the latter duly headed beyond Gomes. Just before the hour mark the men from White Hart Lane forged their way back in front as Wilson Palacios forced a slip from Janssen before his shot was palmed out to Defoe who swept the ball into the empty net. The scoring though was not finished there as FC Twente bagged the sixth goal of an end to end game just four minutes later when Nacer Chadli's expert free-kick found the top corner from the edge of the 'D'. Remarkably that was the end of the scoring for the night with Spurs topping the group after Inter's defeat at Bremen, while Twente will go into the Europa League thanks to this point that kept them clear of the German side.
