Match Reports, 16:00, May 17, 2009 ,
West Brom fail to complete the great escape after goals from Steven Gerrard and Dirk Kuyt gave Liverpool the win.
Liverpool had to soak up some early pressure before going in front on 28 minutes, Shelton Martis dwelt on the ball 25 yards from goal and gifted the ball to Gerrard. He ran through on goal, keeping his composure to lift the ball over Dean Kiely from six yards and it looked from there like the newly crowned footballer of the year was going to spur Liverpool on to a comfortable victory.
Albion came again after the break and were denied a penalty to bring themselves level when Marc-Antoine Fortune went down under a challenge from Lucas when about to tap home from close range.
Just minutes later though it was game over with Kuyt doubling the visitors' lead. Gerrard fed the ball to the Dutchman 35 yards out who managed to take the ball around Jonas Olsson before beating Kiely from the edge of the area.
The league's bottom side continued to show fight as they tried to maintain their Premier League status.Luke Moore hit the post, before Fortune headed over the simplest of headers from 4 yards and then had a goal ruled out for offside.
The Baggies couldn't find a way through the Liverpool defence though and their relegation was confirmed at the final whistle while Liverpool move on to 83 points, their highest points total since the start of the Premier League.
