West Bromwich Albion 2-0 Tottenham Hotspur

Match Reports, 16:32, December 28, 2008

Late goals from Roman Bednar and Craig Beattie were enough to see off 10-man Tottenham in a heated affair at the Hawthorns.

A red card on 35 minutes for Benoit Assou-Ekotto proved to be the only talking point of a dire first half. The Spurs full-back was shown a straight red for a reckless challenge on Gianni Zuiverloon. Moments earlier Tottenham were left incensed as Zuiverloon had brought down Darren Bent but referee Steve Tanner saw nothing wrong with the challenge and allowed play to continue.

The red card proved costly for Spurs, who had been the dominant side until that point, and West Brom made use of the space created and ran the Londoners ragged.

The Baggies had to wait until the 83rd minute before they were able to make the most of their numerical advantage. Bednar managed to steer home Jonathan Greening's hopeful cross to put the Baggies ahead. Spurs were again frustrated by referee Tanner as it appeared that Bednar had fouled Michael Dawson in the build-up but the match official waved play on and the goal counted.

In the final stages Spurs threw everything forward. Jamie O'Hara, who came on as a late substitute for David Bentley, had his effort saved by Scott Carsson. Carsson immediately released the ball and the Baggies broke through James Morrison. Morrison's cross was turned in from close range by Beattie in the final minute of stoppage time to secure the points for the home side.
