West Bromwich Albion 3-1 Wigan Athletic
Match Reports, 17:26, May 9, 2009 ,
Two goals from Marc-Antoine Fortune helped relegation-threatened West Brom to a 3-1 win over Wigan at The Hawthorns.
Fortune gave the home side an early lead when he headed into an empty net after Chris Kirkland parried Gianni Zuiverloon's powerful shot on eight minutes.
Wigan deservedly equalised when Hugo Rodallega blasted home his first goal for the Latics after 16 minutes - and a fine save from Dean Kiely ensured the Colombian didn't register his second just before half time.
West Brom were awarded a penalty on the hour mark after Titus Bramble hauled down Fortune in the box.
Chris Brunt's spot-kick was saved by stand-in Wigan keeper Richard Kingson but the Albion midfielder lashed home the rebound.
Wigan continued to bring the best out of Kiely until Fortune scored his second, and West Brom's third, after good approach play by Valero.
The victory means Albion live to fight another day in their battle to avoid the drop.
