West Ham United 1-1 Manchester City
Match Reports, 18:21, May 9, 2010 ,
West Ham hold Man City to a draw in a surprisingly lively and close fought end-of-season tie at Upton Park.
Luis Boa Morte returned from a knee injury to make his first appearance of the season for West Ham and capped a superb comeback with a goal after 17 minutes. Alessandro Diamanti's sublime back-heel played through the Portuguese winger who netted his first goal in over three years with a deft flick over the keeper.
The Hammers' hopes of a winning end to a disappointing season were ended just moments later however when Shaun Wright-Phillips netted a rare header.
Diamanti rattled the post for the hosts late on in the second-half but it was Roberto Mancini's side who should have been ahead at the break. World Cup hopeful Rob Green denied Emmanuel Adebayor from close range while City also felt they should have had a penalty when Johnson went down in the box under the challenge of Matthew Upson.
Substitute Guillermo Franco forced a fine save out of an in-form Marton Fulop in the second-half as both sides went in search of a winner. Former Hammer Carlos Tevez received a standing ovation when he replaced Roque Santa Cruz and he probably would have been forgiven by the home fans for snatching the points. The Argentinian beat Green to a loose ball inside the six-yard box but lifted his effort over the bar.
