Tim Cahill's header handed Everton all three points while Wigan stay close to the drop zone after a narrow defeat at the DW Stadium.
Louis Saha and Cahill forced good saves from Vladimir Stojkovic while Saha hit the post and had a penalty claim after appearing to be tripped in the box by Gary Caldwell.
Wigan also had their moments, Jason Scotland spurning two good chances while Huga Rogallega had an effort saved well by Tim Howard.
The second half continued at the same lively pace and Everton thought they'd taken the lead in the 73rd minute but Marouane Fellaini's tap-in was ruled offside. Cahill finally broke the deadlock in the 84th minute, rising highest to nod Leighton Baines' corner past Stojkovic.
Charles N'Zogbia rattled Howard's crossbar in stoppage time but the visitors held on to extend their unbeaten run to nine games.
