Shola Ameobi's first half strike gave Newcastle a 1-0 win at Wigan to leave the hosts stuck perilously close to the relegation zone.
The Magpies were full value for the win as they hit the woodwork twice after Ameobi put them in front, while restricting Wigan from creating very much at the opposite end.
The win puts Alan Pardew's side in mid-table on 25 points, while Wigan remain fourth-bottom, just a point clear of the drop zone.
Newcastle should have been ahead in the second minute when Ameobi was unmarked at the back post but headed Danny Simpson's right-wing cross over the crossbar with just Latics keeper Ali Al Habsi to beat.
Tom Cleverley forced a decent save out of Magpies keeper Steve Harper at the other end on five minutes with a curling shot from the edge of the Newcastle area.
Cleverley volleyed a Mohamed Diame cross from the right over the top on 15 minutes, before Newcastle took the lead on 19 minutes.
Steve Gohouri was caught dwelling on the ball by Joey Barton and his angled effort was parried by Al Habsi to Peter Lovenkrands, who bundled his shot against the post, before Ameobi tapped in the rebound.
Newcastle looked comfortable with their lead, but Wigan almost equalised on 36 minutes when Gary Caldwell headed a Ben Watson free kick against the bar and Hugo Rodallega hooked the rebound over the bar.
It was Newcastle's turn to hit the bar on 40 minutes when Fabricio Coloccini headed Barton's corner off the woodwork from the edge of the area.
Jonas Gutierrez could have made it 2-0 just before the break when he was sent through on goal but Al Habsi raced out to deny him with his legs on the edge of the area.
Wigan enjoyed plenty of possession after the break but failed to force Harper into making one save, while Steven Taylor rattled the crossbar with a header on 68 minutes which would have given Newcastle an even more comfortable afternoon had it gone in.
