Wigan Athletic 1-0 Liverpool

Match Reports, 22:26, March 8, 2010 ,

Hugo Rodallega's first half strike gave Wigan their first ever win over Liverpool, whose hopes of finishing in the top four took a blow

Charles N'Zogbia was the pick of the Wigan players in the opening exchanges, twice wriggling free of his marker and firing in crosses that were only just cleared.
Liverpool's first chance of the game fell to Fernando Torres, whose close range volley struck a post after a corner wasn't properly cleared.
The Latics took the lead in the 34th minute when Dirk Kuyt gave the ball away to Emmerson Boyce whose right-wing cross was tapped home from close range by Colombian Rodallega - who has scored on every occasion Wigan have won this season.
Wigan could have doubled their lead in the strangest of circumstances 10 minutes into the second half when Jamie Carragher's clearance struck Marcelo Moreno and Sotirios Kyrgiakos was forced to head the looping ball over his own crossbar.
The best chance for Liverpool again fell to Torres when he met Kuyt's nod down with an acrobatic volley that flashed inches wide of Chris Kirkland's left-hand post.
The one plus for Liverpool was the return of Glenn Johnson from long-term injury, but another defeat on the road leaves their hopes of playing Champions League football next season hanging by a thread.
