Wigan Athletic 1-1 Liverpool

Match Reports, 21:53, January 28, 2009 ,

Liverpool lost more ground in the title race after Mido's late penalty on his debut rescued a point for the Latics.

The visitors dominated much of the first half and Fernando Torres was unlucky not to open the scoring when his glancing header hit the inside of the post in the 13th minute.
It took until four minutes before the break for the deadlock to be broken. Referee Phil Dowd played advantage when Steven Gerrard was fouled just outside the area and Javier Mascherano found Yossi Benayoun, who took the ball round Mike Pollitt and finished superbly from a tight angle.
Wigan were a much improved side in the second half and finally got their reward with seven minutes to go. Substitute Jason Koumas was clipped by Lucas in the area and Mido stepped up to level the scores with a coolly taken spot-kick.
The equaliser sparked a frantic finish and Latics' new signing Hugo Rodallega almost had a dream start to his Wigan career, but his free-kick hit the crossbar in the 90th minute with Pepe Reina beaten.
