GB 'needs Murray' for Davis Cup
Men's Tennis, 16:21, July 8, 2010 ,
One former professional claims Andy Murray should play for Great Britain in the Davis Cup and not leave it to others to compete.
The British number one and world number four will not play for Great Britain in their clash with Turkey this weekend, in which a loss could see them drop to the Euro-Africa Zone III.
In his absence, and also that of British number two Alex Bogdanovic, the highest-ranked Brit on show for the clash in Eastbourne will be world number 253 Jamie Baker.
This is compared to Marsel Ilhan, who is Turkey's number one and world number 103, who will be on show for the opposition.
Former Davis Cup player and tennis commentator John Barrett has told Sporting Life that Murray should play as Britain will be "pushed" by the Turkish side - especially in the singles games.
"It's a pity Andy Murray isn't playing. But his presence isn't going to make much difference unless we have a second decent player," said Barrett.
"His point is our players need to use the lower levels (of the competition) to cut their teeth, as it were. It's a point, but I think people asked to play for their country should turn up and play.
"I know (Roger) Federer isn't playing this year, although he usually plays when Switzerland are in trouble."
