GB on the brink

Men's Tennis, 17:48, July 9, 2010 ,

Great Britain have taken a 2-0 lead going into the second day of their Davis Cup clash with Turkey in Eastbourne.

Defeat in the match would see the GB side drop into Europe/Africa Zone Group III - the lowest possible group in the competition - but Jamie Baker got the team off to the perfect start with a 6-1 6-4 6-1 victory over Ergun Zorlu.
Baker was expected to comfortably beat the world number 866, who was playing his first match on grass, and he did not disappoint, with an assured display against the part-timer.
James Ward then put some daylight between the two sides with a four-set victory over Marsel Ilhan, who is ranked just outside the top 100 and reached the second round at Wimbledon this year.
Ward is almost 200 places lower in the rankings but he pulled off a 6-2 7-5 6-7 (0/7) 6-1 victory over the Turk at Eastbourne's Devonshire Park.
Colin Fleming and Ken Skupski will attempt to seal a 3-0 victory in Saturday's doubles tomorrow which would ensure that Britain would play in Group II for another year.
