Petra Kvitova said she would have to "work hard" to recover from her shock defeat by Ekaterina Makarova at Eastbourne.

The Wimbledon champion was expected to go well in the tune-up for the SW19 showpiece, which starts on June 25, but suffered a 7-5 6-4 defeat to the world number 48 in the first round. The Czech Republic left-hander, who beat Maria Sharapova in the final of last year's tournament, admitted her preparations were not ideal for the third major of the season on grass. The defeat marked an end to her recent good form, Kvitova lost to Sharapova in the French Open semi-finals, and the Wimbledon number two seed said she would go back to the drawing board. "It's not good preparation but I have more days for getting ready for Wimbledon," she said. "I have to work hard now to improve my game."
