LTA deny Bloomfield snub
Men's Tennis, 19:03, July 12, 2010 ,
The Lawn Tennis Association have denied 'snubbing' British player Richard Bloomfield, who reached the semi-finals in Rhode Island.
The 27-year-old is hardly a household name in world tennis and was ranked 552nd in the world prior to his exploits in the USA last week.
The Norfolk player surprised everyone by reaching the last four of the Hall of Fame Championships, losing 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 to eventual winner Mardy Fish.
Bloomfield had not won a match on the senior tour since the 2006 Wimbledon tournament but upped his game considerably during his run to the semi-finals, and he was incensed that nobody from the LTA bothered to congratulate him on his feat.
"I have been around for too long to waste my time with them," he told the Times. "Everybody knows the system is rubbish - indeed, whatever system they have tried, the situation just gets worse and worse. I didn't expect anyone to get in touch with me - in fact, I don't want them to."
However, an LTA spokesman denied they had ignored Bloomfield, saying that messages of congratulations had been sent last week.
The criticism of the governing body is a further embarrassment to an organisation that have been roundly criticised for failing to produce any really world class players to back up Andy Murray over the past decade.
