There was mixed news for the British stars in Portugal as Heather Watson advanced to round two but Elena Baltacha crashed out.

Watson qualified for the main draw of the Estoril Open with a tough three-set win over American Sloane Stephens and she made use of her entry into the main draw by taking care of Lucie Hradecka on Tuesday. The British number three jumped all over her opponent's weak serve in the first set, breaking three times to open up a one-set lead. And, although the Czech star's delivery was better in the second, she was still broken twice by the young Brit, who progressed to the next round with a 6-4 6-4 success in an hour and 33 minutes. The world number 115 will next face another Czech - fourth seed Petra Cetkovska - after she hammered Russian Alexandra Panova 6-2 6-1. Baltacha could not match her Fed Cup team-mates exploits, however, as she fell in straight sets to second seed Maria Kirilenko. An error-strewn first set saw both players broken three times en route to a tie-breaker, which the Russian edged 8-6. The Scot was unable to lift herself in the second set and eventually lost 7-6 6-1 in one hour and 46 minutes.
