Murray comes through Tsonga test
Men's Tennis, 12:53, July 1, 2010 ,
Andy Murray admitted it was far from plain sailing as he moved into the Wimbledon semi-finals with victory over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
The British number one is looking to become the first British winner of the men's singles at SW19 since the late great Fred Perry in 1936 and he has looked in superb form to date and reached the quarter-finals without dropping a set.
However he dropped the opening set to the Frenchman on a tie-break and had to dig deep in the second, which also went to a tie-breaker.
The big-serving 10th seed opened up a 5-4 lead in the tie-break with two serves to win the set, but inexplicably let a ball go that he could have put away which landed in and gave the Scot the point.
Murray never looked back and raced through the next two sets for a 6-7 7-6 6-2 6-2 victory to set up a mouth-watering clash with world number one Rafael Nadal on Friday.
Murray admitted that it was a struggle early on against a man who was taking risks and he is relishing the chance to take on Nadal on the biggest stage of all for a place in the final.
"I was struggling, he was hitting big serves and going for huge shots and I was having to hang in there but I managed to get the tie-break and I played a lot better after that," he said.
"It'll be a great match (against Nadal). It's always fun playing against him. We've played four times in Slams and it's 2-2 so I'll look forward to it.''
