Serena Williams was forced to come from a set down to beat Zheng Jie of China 6-7 (5-7) 6-2 9-7 in the third round at Wimbledon.
The American made some costly errors in the first set tie-break before bouncing back in the second set to force a decider against her determined opponent. Williams managed to hold her nerve in the final set to make it through to the fourth round after two hours and 28 minutes of intense action on Centre Court. The former Wimbledon champion will now meet wildcard Yaroslava Shvedova after she beat 10th seed Sara Errani 6-0 6-4, the Kazakh making history as she became the first player to achieve a golden set at Wimbledon after her Italian opponent didn't win a point in the first set. Also through is defending champion Petra Kvitova, after she destroyed American Varvara Lepchenko 6-1 6-0 to set up a meeting with Francesca Schiavone. Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka also enjoyed a fairly straightforward victory as she beat Slovakia's Jana Cepelova 6-3 6-3. The fourth seed will now face Ana Ivanovic in the fourth round, the 14th seed battling back from a set down to beat Julia Goerges of Germany 3-6 6-3 6-4.
