British number one Elena Baltacha became the first player to exit the French Open after a straight sets defeat to Samantha Stosur.

Baltacha, who made the second round at Roland Garros last year, fought hard in the first set but was ultimately outclassed by the US Open champion. The sixth seed wrapped up the 6-4 6-0 win in just over an hour. Anne Keothavong, Heather Watson and Laura Robson are the remaining British hopes in the women's draw. Watson meets Elena Vesnina, Keothavong takes on Melinda Czink while Robson plays Anabel Medina Garrigues. Baltacha began nervously in her first-round clash against Stosur and suffered a break of serve in game two. She had an immediate opportunity to break back but Stosur repelled her charge and surged into a 5-2 lead. Baltacha briefly rallied with a late break but her Australian opponent hit straight back to take the opening set. It was one-way traffic in the second set as Stosur eased through to the second round, leaving Baltacha to prepare for the grass-court season.
