Williams too hot for Russian
Men's Tennis, 17:02, July 3, 2010 ,
Serena Williams wasted little time in securing her fourth Wimbledon title with a straight sets victory over Vera Zvonareva.
The world number one had not dropped a set en route to the final and she was never in trouble against an opponent who had surprised many in the sport by reaching the final at SW19.
Williams broke the Russian in the eighth game before serving out for the first set and then broke her twice in the second to run out a 6-3 6-2 winner at the All England Club.
Her latest Grand Slam success was her 13th in total and she now moves up to sixth in the all-time list of female Grand Slam singles champions.
The American was delighted to have secured another one of the big four tournaments but she was quick to pay tribute to her vanquished opponent.
"It's amazing to be among such great people," she said. "Vera has been through so much and everyone should give her a big cheer - she really defines what a champion and never giving up means."
Williams won Wimbledon in 2002, 2003 and 2009, and her victory this year means that between her and sister Venus, the title has stayed within the family for nine of the last 11 years.
