Defender hopes for England call-up
Middlesbrough, 15:38, October 10, 2008 ,
Middlesbrough defender David Wheater is in the England Under-21-squad but hopes to make the step up to senior level soon.
The 21-year-old has one senior cap for England, a friendly against Trinidad & Tobago in June, but has since been absent from Fabio Capello's England side.
Wheater may face a long wait to get back in, but hopes one day to force his way back in to Capello's thoughts.
He told the Northern Echo: "I'll be watching the lads and hoping they do well. I'm a fan just like anyone else so it's not like I want them to have a bad game just so it improves my chances,
"Obviously you want to be in the squad so I was a bit disappointed not to get the call to be honest but it's up to Mr Capello.
"I've just got to get on with my job here at Middlesbrough.
"I get lots of good advice from the gaffer who has experience of playing in defence for his country so I look to him as an example.
"Last season was just amazing for me, it couldn't have gone much better on a personal level and getting the England call-up was the icing on the cake.
"But I don't want it to be a one-off so I'm hoping that my performances for Middlesbrough get me noticed again and I get a chance."
