Defender to face United

Middlesbrough, 13:28, July 24, 2009 ,

David Wheater is set for his first pre-season action but Didier Digard will miss Saturday's friendly against Carlisle.

Defender Wheater did not play in the 5-0 win over Dumbarton on Wednesday but boss Gareth Southgate has revealed he expects the 22-year-old to be involved from the start against the Cumbrians.
Digard is struggling with a hip problem so will not feature as Southgate makes full use of his squad in the game.
The boss said on the club's website: "We will have a slightly different team to the one that started on Wednesday. I am looking forward to the way the programme has gone so far and we are looking forward to another good test against Carlisle.
"David Wheater should get his first start of the pre-season programme tomorrow. The next couple of weeks are important for David to get him up to match fitness."
Meanwhile, Boro will now take on Oldham Athletic in a friendly next Wednesday after Darlington pulled out of the game because their squad has been hit by injuries.
