Reds close in on Boro ace

Middlesbrough, 10:50, May 27, 2009 ,

David Wheater has again emerged as a summer target for Liverpool despite his pledge to stay with relegated Middlesbrough.

The England Under-21 international said recently that although he was happy to stay with Boro in the Championship he expected many players to leave, but with star winger Stewart Downing injured, Wheater is one of the club's most saleable assets.
Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is set to renew his interest in the defender, who he tried to sign last summer, but the reported asking price could prevent any deal.
According to reports, Birmingham were quoted a £9m fee for the fans' favourite last week and Benitez would not sanction that amount of money for him, although that price may well start to come down as the summer progresses.
