Well reminded of offensive chanting punishments
Motherwell, 11:46, November 5, 2008 ,
SPL executive chairman Lex Gold says clubs will be docked points if fans persist in offensive chanting after claims made at Motherwell.
Reports claimed a section of Well supporters verbally abused Hamilton's James McCarthy - after his decision to represent the Republic of Ireland over Scotland - in the Lanarkshire derby at Fir Park. And with Rangers supporters also in the news this season over fans singing a verse of the Famine Song, Gold insists action will eventually be taken against those clubs whose fans are guilty of such misdemeanours.
He told the Evening Times: "Clubs know they need to be alert and make sure their fans are doing all they can to avoid sectarian or other offensive abuse.
"The verse of the song (Famine Song) that has featured hugely is racist, it's not sectarian as such, it's racist. The rules were structured to help to try to tackle this.
"You don't start with points deduction. We have a range of sanctions which can be applied.
"The test for us is, are the club doing the maximum they can to ensure that their fans behave? To date, that is what has happened but I've got be careful because there are certain things we're considering just now.
"But there is no doubt they've worked very hard with us and I think it's going in absolutely the right direction."
