Vurnon Anita wants assurances about his place in the Newcastle side before agreeing to join the Magpies from Ajax.
The two clubs have agreed a fee in the region of £6million for the midfielder and a deal will go through if talks between the player and boss Alan Pardew go well.
Meeting the player's demands will not be a problem with a five-year deal worth £10million already in place, but Anita wants to know where he will fit into the side and what plans Pardew has for him before signing.
Anita can play in defence and midfield and the player's father says it is crucial he is happy with his role before putting pen-to-paper.
"The clubs are agreed on a fee, but we're not sure yet about the move," he revealed. "Vurnon first wants to know what his plans are for him. Does he want Vurnon for right-back, or for left-back? Or in midfield?
"These are important questions in making his choice. He needs answers to these questions.
"Should the meeting between the coach and Vurnon have a positive outcome then the whole thing could be finished in a week."
